3.2.3 Materials for the pumps shall be in accordance with table I, as applicable.

3.3 General design. - The design and construction of the pumps shall be the lightest and most
compact possible consistent with the requirements of reliability, accessibility to repair, resistance to
corrosion and erosion, and economy. The principle of reliability, however, is paramount and no com-
promise of this principle shall be made with the other basic requirements of design. The pumps shall
be of such design that they will operate over a long period of years with a minimum of wear or erosion
of any operating parts, such as casings, liners, end plates, rotors, gears, shafts, glands and bearings,
The parts subject to unavoidable wear or erosion shall be of the best material available for the purpose
